Different and the Same: Helping Children Identify and Prevent Prejudice is an award-winning video series designed to help K-3 elementary educators promote inclusion and respect in the classroom.


Different and the Same includes:

Nine Videos (VHS or DVD) - In the nine videos for students, animal puppets portray school children that are diverse in appearance and background. In each program, the puppet characters tackle a different diversity topics including:

  • Video 1: Sticks and Stones - Name-calling
  • Video 2: Cinderella & Me - Feeling left out
  • Video 3: Long Distance - Language barriers
  • Video 4: Play Ball - Stereotyping
  • Video 5: The Club - Standing up Against Prejudice
  • Video 6: Tug of War - Interracial friendships
  • Video 7: Proud To Be Me - Cultural assimilation
  • Video 8: I'm American, Too - Definitions of being American
  • Video 9: Words on the Wall - Hate crimes

Multi-ethnic human actors serve as role models and help puppet characters positively resolve conflicts based on Fairness, Awareness, Inclusion and Respect (F.A.I.R.).

Teacher's Guide - The teacher's guide helps educators integrate Different and the Same into the elementary curriculum. Pre-viewing activities and questions get students thinking. Post-viewing activities and discussions extend students' understanding of key concepts. Lists of multicultural children's books relating to each video topic, also included along with master reproducible for each video.

Training Workshop and Video - The Training Workshop Guide and Video highlight important issues to consider as educators work with issues of prejudice and discrimination.
